Industry Experience
Two Week work placement at Baxter Fawcett Design Studio, London
Specialise in printed and embroidered fashion fabrics
Aided designers in the production of fashion fabric collections
· Preparing fabrics for digital print
· Finishing fabrics, steaming, and the construction garment shapes
· Depicting current trends in the fashion market
- Colour Palettes, themes and imagery and fabric trends
· The professional presentation of work, preparing work to be taken to America for sale. This gained me knowledge in the varying market tastes between countries and tradeshows.
- Referencing work – recording sales – Heading garments professionally
2 week Work placement with Hand and Lock
‘The Worlds Finest Provider of Hand Embroidery Since 1767’ Hand and Lock
· Worked alongside designers producing personalised monogrammed Handkerchiefs
· Pouncing—transferring image onto the fabric, before the embroidery is applied
· I worked on choker designs, working to a brief outlining market level, type of imagery and technique.
From my initial paper designs I produced a tambour sequin and bead sample.
· I was taught the technique of Tambour bead and sequin whilst on placement, and now include it in my own embroidery and embellishment work.
During my 2 week placement I was asked to work the Fashion and Embroidery Conference and Fashion Show
· Preparing the marketing material for the conference
· I helped in the organisation throughout the day of the conference
· I assisted in professionally presenting the work for the ‘ Winners Exhibition’
Hallmark
At the end of my Minor Project in my 3rd year Hallmark visited the College, I had to professionally present my work to them, discussing the techniques, concepts and trend and market influences behind my work. As a result of which I won a placement in the Illustration department.
Indigo Paris 2009 ‘Leading International exhibition specialising in textile design and creation’
I worked on the stand at the 2009 tradeshow, I had visited Indigo the year previously which gave me great knowledge into the textile industry and the industry standard.
· Professional presentation and the referencing of work for a tradeshow
· Liaising with buyers—negotiating prices and selecting work suitable to their brief and requirements.
Work Sold
I had work selected for the 2008 and 2009 Indigo tradeshow.
I sold 6 Designs at the 2009 tradeshow selling to international companies, including France, Spain, America and Italy.
This work included embellished and printed fashion garments and samples and a digitally printed repeat design.
Live Assignments and Exhibitions
Tigerprint– Produce greeting cards, wrap, stationary, gift and toys for Marks and Spencer
I visited the Tigerprint studio in Leeds where they set a Live Brief outlining
- Market Levels– Trends– Colour directions– and a Live deadline.
This was a great experience in working to industry standard, and gaining invaluable experience in professionally presenting the project to Tigerprint on the deadline day.
Bowes Museum, 19th century period house Barnard Castle ‘ Art of Botanicals Exhibition’
During my second year I took part in a live assignment and exhibition with Bowes Museum.
Throughout the project I visited the period rooms and compiled drawings which I fused with Botanicals to create an Interior textile length which combined a combination of print and embroidery. The length was exhibited as part of the ‘Art of Botanicals Exhibition’ along with my drawings and sketchbooks.
· A piece of my work was also selected to advertise the exhibition in the Museum Leaflet.
Fashion and Embroidery Show ‘ Exhibition of the very best in textiles’
I have produced and sold work at the Fashion and Embroidery Show in Harrogate
I also worked on the stand at the 2008 show
-Displaying and referencing work– recoding sales and liaising with buyers
Exhibition at the Business Design Centre Hartlepool
I had work selected as part of an exhibition at the Design Centre, this included framed drawings and textile art.
Practical Skills
I love the construction of stitch and marks created through silk screen printing. Through my work I have pushed traditional techniques to create new innovative structures, combining textile processes print– embroidery– and manipulation. I have excellent skills in both print and embroidery.
Embroidery Print
- Metal thread embroidery -Production and exposure of screen for silk screen
- Raised and padded embroidery -Preparation of pastes– (ill.) discharge, pigment,
- Applique and Shadow Applique acid and procion printing, steaming and finishing fabrics
- Tambour bead and Sequin -Foiling, minor foam, flock, hand painting, Devore
- Decorative embellishment -Dying of fabrics with procions and acids
- Wide knowledge of hand embroidery -Digital print and the preparation of imagery using Photoshop
Stitches -Repeat Structures for Fashion, Interior and Gift
- Wide knowledge of machine embroidery
· I have explored cut work by hand and fabric manipulation and pleating techniques
· Excellent colour Awareness, observational drawing, mark making, and aesthetic design awareness
· Excellent Photoshop skills, I have also completed a beginners course in Illustrator
